Building Jamf Pro smart groups for Ventura-compatible and Ventura-incompatible Mac models

As part of preparing for macOS Ventura, it may be useful to have a way to easily distinguish between the Macs in your fleet which can run macOS Ventura and those which can’t. Apple has published the following list of Macs which are compatible with Ventura, which will help with both identitying the compatible Mac models as well as the incompatible Mac models.

  • iMac: 2017 and later models
  • iMac Pro: All models
  • MacBook: 2017 and later models
  • MacBook Pro: 2017 and later models
  • MacBook Air: 2018 and later models
  • Mac Mini: 2018 or later models
  • Mac Pro: 2019 or later models
  • Mac Studio: All models

From there, here’s the list of Mac models which are compatible with macOS Ventura:

We can use this information to build smart groups which can help identify which Macs are compatible with Ventura and which are not. For more details, see below the jump:

Using the information mentioned above, I was able to build two smart groups, one which displays compatible Macs and the other which displays incompatible Macs.

The compatible Macs’ smart group checks for if the Mac in question’s model identifier is any of the model identifiers which are compatible with Ventura:

To upload these smart group XML files to a Jamf Pro server server using the API, download the XML file to a convenient location, then run the commands shown below (substituting your Jamf Pro server and Jamf Pro user account information as appropriate):

Note: You will first need to get an API bearer token for authentication. Use the commands below (depending on which OS you’re using) to obtain a bearer token from your JAMF Pro server:

    I do something very different. Initially I was scanning some of Apples web pages matching model, but since macOS 11 Big Sur, a change to the softwareupdate command provided a much better option.

    In macOS 10.15 Catalina, the softwareupdate command introduced the ability to ask it to download the macOS full installers (softwareupdate –fetch-full-installer –full-installer-version ##), in Big Sur they added –list-full-installers, which I have an extension attribute configured to store the result. Then for the Smart Group I can simply set the criteria as extension attribute Like macOS name.

    This is far easier to manage than needing to track which model supports which macOS version.

      Sorry forgot to add one little detail, I noticed Apple was having the –list-full-installers option only list compatible macOS version thanks to it only showing macOS 12 Monterey on a MacBook Pro M1 Pro, vs 11 and 12 on a MacBook Air M1, and as far back as 10.13 through to 12 on an Intel MackBook Pro 2017 model.

        I don’t like the idea of an extension attribute that reads “softwareupdate –list-full-installers”. It is not an instant response, which will slow down your recon, and the “softwareupdate” command is prone to hanging. Example, I just ran “softwareupdate –list-full-installers” twice in quick succession, and the command did not respond the second time. In fact, it’s not responding at all now even after kickstarting softwareupdated. In general, I would advise to stay away from the softwareupdate command during recons. In fact, anything that requires a live connection to the internet during a recon is better abstracted out to a launchdaemon, with an EA just to read the results from the file that is written to by the LD.

    I use regex matches for this to save having so many criteria. You just need one criteria with ModelIdentifier matches regex:

      I actually have the command run once a month, by caching the result on the computer and loading the cache version into the extension attribute, that way I’m not slowing down recon.

    Thanks for the work. I did have some troubles with the commands, so I share my fixes here (I’m on Monterey, so I’m not sure why it didn’t work with me).

    1) The `| plutil -extract token raw –` part of the first command gave an error (“–: file does not exist or is not readable or is not a regular file”), so I just left it out. I got back json, so I could use curl’s output directly.

    2) The curl upload command finished but showed no error. So the `-f` option is to fail silently. I swapped the `-f` for `–fail-with-body` and the response said something like “The request requires user authentication” and refered to an rfc2616 section. I fixed this by adding the `-u …` part of the first curl command to the second and third. This succeeded.

    It took a while before the groups showed up in my list, but I could access them directly with the ID returned from the curl-command.
