That Kerry campaign, they're brilliant!
*shaking head* The Democratic National Committee has just issued a press release demanding that the Republican National Committee come clean on their involvement with the forged National Guard documents.
McAuliffe: Will GOP Answer If They Know Whether Stone, Others Had Involvement With CBS Documents?
Washington, D.C. – In response to false Republican accusations regarding the CBS documents, Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe issued this statement:
“In today’s New York Post, Roger Stone, who became associated with political ‘dirty tricks’ while working for Nixon, refused to deny that he was the source the CBS documents.
“Will Ed Gillespie or the White House admit today what they know about Mr. Stone’s relationship with these forged documents? Will they unequivocally rule out Mr. Stone’s involvement? Or for that matter, others with a known history of dirty tricks, such as Karl Rove or Ralph Reed?”
I want to get this straight in my head. CBS, and Dan Rather, got a set of forged memos from Bill Burkett. as part of a story designed to hurt President Bush, the Republican candidate. The CBS producer on the story, Mary Mapes passed on Burkett's number to Joe Lockhart, a top adviser for the Kerry campaign who called Burkett himself. (Lockhart denies talking to Burkett about any Guard documents) So now there's a link between the Kerry campaign and the provider of the forgeries. Coincidentally(?), the Kerry campaign was about to launch its Fortunate Son video. The video implies that President Bush lied about his service in the National Guard and repeats the unsupported allegations that Bush did not meet his obligations to the National Guard, which would have tied in neatly with the CBS news story with the memos. One nice neat smear package, with the memos being the bow that tied everything together and provided a firm evidentary foundation. One small problem: the forger of the documents was inept and the whole mess blew up in CBS's face and also blew the back out of “Fortunate Son.”
Terry McAuliffe's conclusion to all this? He thinks this is the *Republicans* playing dirty tricks. Draw your own conclusions.
