My math skills went wrong, somewhere, but it's OK.
I had the pleasant surprise of getting more in a paycheck than I'd thought I would. It was for the last three days in April (I'm paid twice a month, and I'm paid two weeks behind my work; pretty standard) With MD's income taxes, I'd calculated that my total tax burden would be about 39% of my paycheck. I was pleasantly surprised to discover it was actually about 26%. Once I get my 401k program going along with my pre-tax commuting allowance, I'll see my total net monies go down but my reduced tax witholding will ease the pain. I'd been somewhat worried about my after-tax salary being less than I'd need to build up my savings back up after my spending spree this month, but I've recalculated how much I'll have left over at the end of the month and I'm going to be just fine.
